What is a Remote Worker Visa?

The Remote Worker Visa, also known as the Digital Nomad Visa, is a temporary residence permit that allows foreign nationals to live in South Africa while working remotely for an employer or clients based outside the country. This visa is designed for location-independent professionals such as remote employees, freelancers, and digital entrepreneurs. It is initially valid for 12 months and can be renewed annually for up to 36 months (3 years).

Who Can Apply for a Remote Worker Visa?

  • Remote employees working for companies located outside South Africa.
  • Freelancers or consultants with international clients.
  • Digital entrepreneurs operating businesses abroad.

Key Requirements for a Remote Worker Visa

  • Valid Passport: Must be machine-readable, valid for at least 30 days after your intended departure, and have at least two blank pages.
  • Two Passport Photos: In line with South African specifications.
  • Completed Application Form (DHA-1738): Signed by the applicant.
  • Medical Report (Form BI-811) and Radiological Report (Form BI-806): Not older than six months.
  • Police Clearance Certificates: From all countries where you have lived for 12 months or more in the last five years.
  • Proof of Accommodation: Hotel booking, lease agreement, or host invitation letter.
  • Cover Letter: Explaining the purpose of your stay and intended duration.

Financial Requirements

  • Minimum Monthly Income: ZAR R54,000.00
  • Proof of Income:
    • Employment contracts or letters from foreign employers.
    • Bank statements showing consistent income.
    • Tax returns or payslips.
    • Invoices and payment confirmations (for freelancers).
    • Registration with SARS.

Critical Skills Work Visa

For professionals with expertise on South Africa’s Critical Skills List. No job offer needed. Valid up to 5 years and leads to permanent residency. Requires SAQA qualification evaluation and possibly professional registration.

Intra-Company Transfer Work Visa

Issued to employees transferred from a foreign branch to a South African office. Valid for 4 years. Requires six months prior employment and a skills transfer plan. No SAQA evaluation needed.

General Work Visa

For foreign nationals with a confirmed job offer. Valid up to 5 years. Requires SAQA evaluation and labor market testing. Operates on a points-based system and can lead to permanent residency.
